Country Steve | Fishing Personality

ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Steve and I have been walleye fishing together for over 20 years. In this episode, we talk about how we met and some of our legendary fishing trips. We also discuss that one spring day walleye fishing on Lake Erie when "Big Steve" became "Country Steve"

All right. So I can't reallybelieve this, but we could got demand, count steam and this kind of I'mgoing to use his own words against him. He says, it painsme to say he's using that in a lot of other things we've done.Producer do right, but the people want country, state. They do now. Now, see, here's the deal. See, I've known Steve a verylong time, twenty plus years. I'm a year. Yeah, yeah, he was, you were. He was our camera boast, he wasour camera boat drivers years ago. The OKAYS BE A couple of years ofknowing dad. Yeah, eleven years. You and me go back way whenyou were probably some twenty. So Steve was on that camera boat on ourfirst tell absolutely to stay. It's him, Steve's been the day that I said, can you we duck around the island that day. I didn't.I didn't want to go there this quick, but let's just let's just go there. So literally, let's bring this back and this is so this isnot how we're starting, but we're going to go there anyhow because there's noagenda here and this country, Steve's country, Steve. There's there's no's gonna gowhere it's gonna go. So we're shooting the first episode of my TVshow, the local catch. Tad as the producer. He works for theproduction company. I'm like a CO producer and the host trying to take afishing show not ever been on the water with the camera. Does it knowhe's like he's a football guy doing stuff. You know when any runs the showand what he does on his day is very good at. But whenyou know he's a Tripod Guy, that's how what's we we joked with allthese guys in the boats. He's a Tripod Guy. You were out there. We leave and we're going about seventeen or eighteen miles, three to fivefooters and twenty mile an hour, twenty five mile way. That's legit.First first time out of that's leg that's legit. And and I've got infairness, you know again I hate giving you know, compliments on something workcan get back on me, but I got Steve's Mike, Pat Camera BoatGuy, because he's going to make it happy. He's a great driver andI know I don't have to worry about that like I would other people. So we start setting up on stuff and we catch a couple fish quick andthen I'm like man, this ain't right. The current was wrong in this andthat, and Tad says to me, well, no, we need togo over by that island and go this way and catch on the wind. Big, no, no, it was because of the the light andand I need an island. There's just all water here, and I'm like, I look, I'm like you gotta be freaking kick, like, whatkind of clown did they send me? And then you remember the other cameraboat got or the camera guy that was in the boat with Steve Goes Hey, do you have a raft? You can let me out behind the boats, the Cuban refugee. Yeah, John, and I'm just slightly on Gonzalis, dude, and that that shit show known as the local catch was actuallya really good deal. But I mean we lasted whatever it was. Idid not know nine or ten years. I was country Steve when the otherwell, it wasn't cut that was just big Steve, okay, but thatwas bit known that I had met him before our big Steve. Yeah,I did not know I had met him before, prior to him gaining themoniker of Country Steve From and and truthfully, the moniker and that's where I'm goingwith us. This is why the people, I didn't really have achoice in the matter. We had to sit down and do this because peopledemanded it. They really do. I mean I'm sitting there eating in arestaurant the other day and you guys like Hey, man, country Steve forlife. I'm at the book launch doing a shoot and the guys like, who the HELL's Country Steve? And then it's just it's it's insane, allthe stuff that we do the country Steve. They love you, they'd love countryseve. A few people even say I'm too tough on you. Yeah, but they don't know that. They don't know the country Steve. Iknow, don't ever feel bit Tad. Well, that country Steve is theone that lost my part of my microphone. It flew out into the wake, and he says, I don't really care, I don't feel bad.I don't really it's fun. It's fun, I don't care. Feelings. Icare, but I don't care. So that's why we're doing this, because people want to know about country Steve and I'm going to tell you.So it's a very long story. In some of us, of course,we can't even put on because this is a kid friendly show. But Ihad fished against Steve Because early in my career I fished a lot of tournaments, like a lot, and fishing some of the different ones I had,I guess the nicest way of saying it here is is a Vakanda compliment. Is Me and Steve always ended up in the same places. But I'm thinkthis guy's kind of a Jackal, okay, and I was fishing because the businesstender things. I at that point of fish to tournament while several termsus in a row with a guy who he basically sucked and Steve was actuallylaughing at me. This is but I don't know the guy laughing at mebecause he knows like what I'm saying to this guy, because we are thatclose for fishing structure, and Steve is laughing at me because I'm having aturn. I even said a tournament within my own tournament, in my ownboat, because the guy was like no, we're going to do this and andSteve is outright just laughing at us and I'm like there's this guy's injackass. But we always end up in the same place. And then youfast forward I don't know the timeframe, I'm bad at these things, butmaybe a year or something. And a...

...mutual friend of ours says, Hey, there's this other guy that shooting his TV show and a certain place upin Canada and he says, Hey, you need to go help him out, and I'm like and then I had a sponsor say the same thing andI'm like, I don't know any of these people. I don't know didI know skin in the game, and so we'll just leave that guy anonymous. But basically both that's better. That guy called us both up and said, hey, you guys need to get together. So I literally meet Steveand can I even? Can I tell them what happened in your driveway?I mean, yeah, is that too much? Oh No, no,so you're gonna have to get the bleep ready button, baby. Well,I how we have country Steve on and he said nothing. You guys. It's just been US blobbing. Oh, it's great, it's just because he'sgoing to come guns out with us. I mean you can get I wantto hear you when I'm done blabbing. I want to hear your take onthis or where I'm off, or whatever you think. But so we Iget put together with country Steve and we're going to go on this triple likean eight hour drive. I've and we're taken basically most of my gear. And Yeah, he sold your boat. Yeah, that's what was. Ididn't have my boat yet, I had sold mind. So we're taking alot of my gear and we're again, you don't know this guy. We'regoing to drive eight hours on a truck in some cabin and help film aTV show that we're not even the part of, but we're there because we'rehelping out, which we'll get into that show, but not one of mygood friends, my tournament partner. Yeah, but it was. It was.It wasn't. It was him, but it was really in directly, which is another whole deal. So, long story short, I pull intothis guy's driveway, AK now country Steve, and this lady comes out and isjust ripping me an asshole. No clue who she has. I wouldsay lady, but yeah, and it turns out it's country see's first wife. And Yeah, lady, I look her right in the face. Iput my window down and I was like listen, here, you get ready. Who Do you think you are? And I was like get the Kythe way for I run you over. There's a lot of bleeps they justhad to use there and not any rate. Pull on and I'm like, I'mnot ready to go home because I'm thinking, Hey, this is,you know, I find out, Hey, this is this guy's kind of wife, but about to be ex wife and it. But you don't knowwhat, where that's going to go, right? And he's like, Oh, yeah, I see you. Me The I don't know what. Whatdid you call her at that point? She's crazy in a cramphouse rat me. She absolutely so I pull in there and hit here's this duty. He'sjust like me, you know, and come and producer to your agree rightme, like you could say things, like he could call me something,I don't it doesn't even. I don't even like raise an eyebrow, quiteliterally, and vice versa. And here I just called this guy's wife likethe nastiest stuff I could ever think of, and he's just like okay, anyhow. So we're going to pull Aaron is tired, then we're going toget on the road. He cool there and I'm like, you know what, I think me and this guy could get along and and there's few thingsthat I don't know if the statute of limitations of the but we literally longhauled eight hour drive and Steve was driving four hundred miles an hour. Weindirectly ended up on an episode of COPS. Do you want to tell them aboutthe barrels in the car racing? Do you remember that? No,I don't have to recall it. All I know is it said a hundredmiles an hour. That's what I did there, kilometers, you know whatever. True. I can only tell you so much, but this is,and again interrupt me, where when you start remembering this, because this istwenty years ago. We're driving on a highway. He is driving literally ahundred miles an hour. I don't like, do we even going to get therenow? This is what the twenty one foot ranger boat, okay, and and there are where we're at. We're literally drive on her miles hour. There are soccer moms, correct me if I'm wrong, in minivans thatare passing us. Yeah, yeah, they were. They were passing this. I mean sometimes like we were standing still. I mean we might nothave been doing a hundred, but we were doing eighty miles an hour toeighty five, legit, you were doing at least that was steady, butthen you were passing doing yet it was I was like, Oh my God, because the other truck did. The Guy, the owner of the othertruck, of the boat that was following us, ripped into my tournament partnerlike why are you driving so fast? You guys have been wozy. Whatdo you say? We're doing like eighty three. That was the average speedthat we had. So I just want you to picture this, where there'sa car driving that was like a five hundred dollar car in the opposite lane. Okay, it's like three or four lanes wide, opposite separate median, and we watch this thing go by and all of a sudden there's just likea dozen cop cars and even though we're going that fast, you you knowwhere I'm going. Now there's no you could read like what the car doorsay, producer do, but they're all different colors and you know what Imean. You're like, there's a lot of different in missipalities, like thisdude's been getting chased for a while. Yeah, well, sudden all yousee is like lights and then they're they're they're gone. Well, the dudecut through the median somewhere and came back our way. They did this acouple times, so like over probably a forty minute period or whatever it was, the dudes coming back around. Wait,...

...so the guy gets up ahead andthen he spins back and he comes back. It would be like Iseventy five, but separate medium. He's somehow cut through the lanes. He'sand do. He is just absolutely bumper cars, just we and people arejust going. It was like ambulances, but there was none and there arejust cop cars. And every time you we see him there's more chasing becausemore people are getting involved. Pretty soon he comes up behind us. Now, okay, do you do you remember this? It's vaguely, vaguely, this. E. This is how jagged up the country Steven. He doesn'teven remember, like insanus. It's just a normal occur it. Honestly,it's an that's that it was. It should have been called Crazy Steve. Now he's country Steve, because Mrs Country Steve Number Two is much rain broughtthe rains and, yeah, much more complimentary than the non human being atnumber one was. But any rate. So here we are and this carcomes up in Steve's like hey, I got this, get a pinch himoff here. Yes, so, producer, visualize this. We're coming over anoverpass. We're like dips down because they only cut so much out forthis thing to go up, because there's like big trucks and stuff. They'regoing on eathest right. So major road, like it's starting to get down. There's an overpast, you know, they got the barrels full of wateror sand. Yeah, who uses his boat to tail with this psycho intoit? Crazy Steve. Yeah, it's that's almos as bad as the coastguardone, but we'll leave them now. The Coast Guard where that's that's toomuch for today. So, yeah, I start this trip off with thisguy driving a hundred at times he tail whips a dude who obviously doesn't careabout anything. He's got twenty cop cars following him. At this point. He tail whips in which full people know he basically do you whip it,Direk the truck so that the trailer went out right and this to who divebombed into and he's like mission accomplished down this you know. So we mayhave gotten pulled over and talked to and may have the guy said country stevenso many words said to him, because I don't remember exactly the words twentyyears later, but the guy told us like he was so just he couldn'teven talk. You was so mad. He tolds to get out of there. But he's like country Steve said to him. He's like, Hey,I did what you guys had twenty cops. He couldn't do. He's like it'sall, it's all done. It's overweight. I ended it for him. He had he ended it for him. And truthfully, that this trip ismany trips as I have been on as a full time fishing guide orprofessional and twenty years it's still and I would imagine was, is it foryou, one of the most memorable trips? Oh, yeah, the fishing wasjust phenomenal, but I don't we've been there a couple times after andit still has not been duplicated what we did, even with the fish thatwe lost. So if somebody is wondering of now that they did kind ofknow what we're gonna do with country Steve, like Hey, do you want tohear about this? I'm just going to give you a little, alittle teaser. We caught twenty three wallies over ten pounds scaled in one dayon this trip, one day, most insane day of big fishing. Butthen we're going to talk about the big, big fish, but we'll get thereslow. So kind of visualize this thing. There was so many shenanigansthat happened, but one of my favorites is we get there and we're atthis this lodge, and the guy basically had negotiated with this TV show. And you got to remember, not that I'm or country Steve This for finedand any standpoint, but twenty years ago there was a there was more likerazorblade edges. Yeah, yeah, my tournament partner lost a lot of friendsdue to me. Remember. Yeah, I do so, but in youremember, I was always telling you even then, early on. I'm like, Dude, you can't do this to me, and I man like Igotta, I can't, you know, I can't get in the stuff. And you know, you know whatever. You meant boat. You can't dothis. Yeah, you're like yeah, whatever, yeah, whatever. Sowe pull into this lodge and you know, again, I'm no stranger to this, even though I've done a lot more sense. Then we pulled inthis place. It's amazing the boat watch is about thirty feet from where we'restaying. They give us a brand new cabin that normally would go for acouple grand and night. Okay, producer dude, like five, six bedrooms. Then we've got the camera people, we've got the camera boat, we'vegot the assist guy, we got the host, you know. So,I mean there's eight guys maybe staying. Remember this show. The show wasn'tabout us, right, we are there only to help. Like, honestly, this is like an expense paid producer do. This was like an expensepaid trip whe or hey, you go help out, no big deal. It's kind of cool, as I going on a vacation. You get towatch some these kids for an hour type of thing and you get to goon the trip for free. Kind of one of those deals and we alwayshad kind of want to go there. We both got talked into it.Best worst thing we ever did. So any out, did not digress toomuch. We're at this place and I'm trying to kind of figure the wholething out and I go into the cabin and we going. Then there's nosheets. You remember this? Oh yes, yeah, you want to finish?Don't talk don't know. I'll let you to make sure you interject.Hers is the most one sided. It's always going to be this way.I am not a users TV. We...

...should have well, not that. Not only that, Rosslikes to talk a lot. I do, I do, but you know what, he brings it to life more than I would. That's that's fact. I can interject maybe. Yeah, make sure youget this full country version and and stop me at any point. So I'mat this deal and I recognize this guy that owns this lodge from doing somework with a magazine who I've done some work with at that point, right. And so he kind of says hey, you know, we kind of havea little bit of mutual admiration if you just oh hey, you know, they're emily. There's a little street cred you know, it's a littlebit of bonding or whatever. I'm like Hey, man, you know,we don't know where we're going. We're trying to help these guys out,we're trying to figure this out. And it became very clear very quickly thatthese dudes did not want any outside input. And why are you here? Whatare you doing? I mean there was it was a cold shoulders thatfair cool? Yeah, I mean they were I don't want to say thefurther you get up in Canada, the router they get. I mean theyshut the doors on you. They just in the fishing community. They clamup. I don't know. Picture everywhere else in Canada. They're really politegroup of people. Maybe they seen it sound caps it right. I don'tknow. COPS, you don't know. Yah, don't know, but copscut. Most Canadian people are really, really nice. But this, thiscertain guy was. He really thought you was the can't me out. SoI want you to visualize this and maybe somebody please tune in and a commentbelow or whatever. That I'm I get this cabin rented. You got tothink about this. For like a couple thousand dollars on night. Okay, sleep twelve people. Yeah, I'm not saying it was worth it. Itwasn't, but it was a brand new cabin on the water. The boatwatch was close. Okay, I guess that's Canadian money. I mean soyou know, we're down to a thousand dollars and whatever. Okay, butagain, I'm digressing again. But so I said of the Guy, Igo in there and I'm like no, visualize this, because you can seewhere the problems are going occur, like one bed's got a king bed, another one's got like three bunk beds and other one's got to twin beds. And I wanted like one rooms got clean beds. And we got like roughlyeight guys on this team of that you know is going to be there forfour or five days, whatever it was, and we roll in there and there'sno sheets and any of the beds, so no towels, no sheets, and we are in the middle of nowhere, like this isn't like awill run down to Walmart or dollar general, team of the road, like there'snothing, like we're two hour ride to get anything. And again,me and him, you know, me and Steve had done enough traveling atthis point. Like you bring like we have three extension cords instead of one, we've got extra line, we've got all the stuff we know that we'regoing to need. But when I looked into this, like hey, thiscabins a couple grand night, like you know, you only bring what yourbrain and you have certain little toil trees and things, because we just know. But like right, I didn't bring bed sheets, Bro I didn't reallyblank. It's no, you like he would think. So we going totalk to this guy and you think this is this is a simple solution.Right, producer dude, like, Oh, here, here's stats of sheets. Here you go, no problem. The Guy Literally was like what's yourproblem? Man, in Americans don't Fin Perkins, and I'm like, Iwas like okay, man. I was like, well, I looked onyour website and didn't say anything about bring your own sheets and blankets and pillowsbison. Can you forgive us, because we're here helping to promote your youknow, your your business, and could you just get some sheets? Andhe just mentioned let us up. He would. He was. I mean, we've been on the road free. It was eight hours at least. We but I mean we didn't leave early. We left that what three o'clock,so we got there at eleven, somewhere in there. I don't know. Eb worked all day, no showers on the road, or seven, eight hours get there. You know, we're re Siver, slimy. Yeah, see that. No sheets and he's going back, but he's not goingto give the sheets. You know, I'm not going to give me thesheets. I said, dude, those are brand new mattresses. I don'tcare. I will sleep in there, I will grease it, I willnot take a shower for three days. It is you, your mom, your bed, you take how you want. I just walked out the door.I don't know what said after that, but miraculously we got cheats how andit was hand he said. He said I think the almost a vervathim, coach, because it's kind of etched in my brains. He's like, if you want me to let my greasy ass body all over your brandnew fool, that's cool, Bro, but I just want to give youa heads up, because you know like this. You did this deal anyand you know he said it very calm way. Just, no, no, no, it's crazy. was raised. Was You mighty beend in explative inthere, but with you know, like with big head, like theydon't really scream. Right, say it calm, but you you get youget the point right, right, you get them message doesn't get louder.Yeah, it doesn't need to. It doesn't need to be. He gotthe point. I mean, this guy was just unbelievable. whatdy. LikeI said, most Canadians are nicest. Guy Was not. We butted headsthe whole time. So we're in a...

...couple hundred feet of water here andwe're dips off and even this guy that's supposed to help and it's just yellingat me and Steve. You don't know what the hell you're doing. Andwe mark some fish and I tell Steve, I'm like, Dude, whip it, whip it. Let's go back through there. And we went backthrough there. We caught a wall I do. That was like twenty eightinches, but it weighed like twelve something. You remember that? And I knowway to King Salmon on or something, because it was like vertical, likeit was straight up and down. And this guy was still mad atus. And remember how they were all angry, like you think I'm angry. All them more angry except for, you know, the guy. Wewent there with these, what am I good friends. Yeah, they werejust angry. So we catch this fish in this guy's like angry. Wecaught this twelve night of power. So we're kind of telling they like thecamera guys like Hey, this is a setup. And Ironically, that thatwhole program that we were doing, which I don't know we need to saywhat that was, but that was kind of the program for the subsequent numberof years that we went there and did that again. But and we justkind of, I go and say, locked into it, but a littlebit. I guess, Hey, racis, we looked into it because we whatwe set up for colors and stuff there. Yeah, even with colors, I mean we didn't have I guess it was good we didn't have allthe colors that we carry nowadays because we were able to dial it in reallyquick, really fast. And the terrible thing is is we had those dialwith three hundreds with the brain. You ever try to real fish in withterrible. You're letting out a hundred eighty feet a line or whatever it wasin your three hundred because it's so I feel like I felt like I wasusing a fimble to try to wind up like construction rope or something. Itwas forever so and then again a little bit if it. We're looking atthese guides and am looking at their equipment and I'm like, these guys aren'tset up to do what we're doing. There's just not, I mean sportset up to fish. Even the top guy that I don't remember his name, but I think you still get in contact with them once in a while, but it's it was quite comic book, especially this guy that own the resort'stelling us what to do. In we even went out at night. The night it was a spotterfest and it I guess it wasn't a slider fest, but I mean we caught eight fish there one, but they're all giant. They're all over ten pounds. Yeah, I mean it was crazy. Imean never seen anything like it before and I don't know if we everwill. So I mean I'm hesitant because some of this I just I knowwe can't really tell. Some of IT I don't want out there for otherreasons aside from whatever been so my suits pending. So we end up basicallyout gas and everybody can we did that today. Mean, producer did whatfifty miles on Lake Erie today, and we smoked him, by the way, but we all gassed everybody, right. So these people all were fishing likehere and their gas tanks were big enough and me and Steve are like, Dude, we got a credit card, we're going to do this. Yeah, we didn't have a problem with that, but it's I guess itwasn't out gass them. It's just they could not put it together like Lea. Their boats kind of went where we went. Well, my post beena lot of places. It shouldn't have been that one. If I recalledthe second I yeah, I almost wrecked country stage boat. Yeah, yeah, don't you know how you got out of their yard? I'll get tothat because I think that could still get me to jail, but nevertheless. So we're making these, I'll just say, a very long run, no matterwhat, at the end of our fuel reserves, no matter what you'redoing. And we got on fish that I can confidently say at that timehadn't really seen many lures and I think that was a big part of thedeal. Really. I think so. You know, I know guys. You know we had talked to guys that started coming there after we were done, you know, making all our chips out there, and I think theyput it together a little bit, but I think that was at the endof when that fishery is taking a dive. I don't think it's fishery's doing thesame. I don't even know somebody. Those fish were deep. I thinkthat a lot of guys, when they called them, they kept themor they kill them, even if they let him go? Yeah, actuallywouldn't fism. They wouldn't let him back or put them back the right way. Right. Those people kill and eat everything over there, and I don'tget it. But when we were down there, you know that, noton the first trip, but the chartography from humming bird, which is whenI started using some of that stuff, even before I was with them. That was like, that's actually one of the that was one of those trips. was when I started working with I decided like Hey, I need toget with you know, I need to use something that's got lake master onit because, yeah, that would have been a game changer, you know. I mean he had that at the time. Yeah, that very, very first time. But so, to put this in perspective, we're downthere, were catching ten pound plus fish, like it will and these fish generthey're not like they're thirty three inches long. I mean most of themthey're just absolutely like built like a hippo. They're like country Steve Way back inthe day. Yeah, there's short and stifle, the country Steve atthe hundred pound extra mark. Yeah,...

...short and fat. So, honestto God, we had a double going on. And this is where thefirst guy gets thrown under the bus. Do you remember this? The Guythat stole my candy bars? Get to eat your lunch. He's he waseating my candy. But I want you to visualize this. Producer. Dude, I turn around and and Country Steve told this guy. He was like, I ain't known this guy real long, but you don't mess with a short, skinny kids long she's gonna he's going to cheer you up. AndI start room. This guy eat my lunch. So he just liked wentinto your bag and or went into the cooler. Yeah, and just atemuch everything, because me and him or back we're doing everything, which iskind of part of the part of the story. I want you to visualizethis as a non fisherman, but being around all this, like what wouldyou even do? You know, I want your input of what you wouldsay if you're in our shoes. So we're back there in this guy waslike again, we're making short passes at times because the current is strong, like we I think that's why we did while there, if we understood thecurrent thing people up there. I don't think did, because it was likewhat we deal with on Lake Erie or second I'll bet everything anyhow. So, anyhow, this guy is like he's like wanting to help, but it'slike a little kid trying to help me clean fish with a butter knife. You're like what, he's not going to real any fishing. He you can't. He wouldn't. He wouldn't when we were clearing lines, because we hadtons of lines out, just like we did today, but we got threedudes to help. He wouldn't touch a Rod. We had a realm alland he just sat there and we're like, Bro, like help out. He'slike, I'm the driver. Do you remember that? But yeah,I'm the driver. I don't realigne. and no wonder. My other tournamentpartner, you know, when a different way, but we didn't need himto drive the both because on the back of Mike and then is where Iknew that me and you were going to be friends. I don't know ifI've ever said this. This incident right here. First of all, youknew about the skinny kid lunch. That's that's a bonus. But right here, think about this producer dude, the kicker motor. Where using a kickermotor. This again, twenty years ago. We have a tie bar that goesbetween, you have to physically put the tie bar on. Okay, yeah, it was the old panther style. Yeah, right. So you haveto put this bar on and when you put that on the big steeringwheel on the boat, the prone broom makes them both turn. But we'reonly using okay, got yourself much, just like just like today. Yeah, right, you want to have the proto motor up front. Is becausethat's what we use. That's why I started using to drive. So wehad that and didn't have remote at I'm so we had to bring back thefoot poddle all the way down past the driver's side, so he knows thecords coming to the back. So I'm adjusting the speed with that. Wetake off the tie bar. So he's back. He's, you know,in the driver's season boat turning moment. I guessed tie bar. So I'min really God doing driving the boats. I am the boat drive. I'mthe driver. I'm the driver. Cup saying it's like a little kid.It was like a little kid in amusing part and like it wasn't five minutesof him not knowing what he's going to do. It was like eight hoursand then it's a one point. So he thought he was driving the wholetime, and this is where I was like this is the perfect me in. This asshole. Have to be friends. Steve Takes The foot pedal because thisguy doesn't realize that we're staring with that loader right now. You gotyou start, you guys just looking at each other. And again you haven't. I don't really know sae. Yeah, but I know a fellow asshole hereand he takes the pedal, and so this guy's you know, heliterally like drives us like we're going to hit this island and then heel.I. No, no, eight. So he's doing this and he's turningany won't turn and he's turning right out and then he's like then he turnsback and I'm like, Oh, this guy's a jackass. I like thisguy, this is my dipe of dude right here, and I'm like thisguy still doesn't know. He ate my lunch and he still doesn't know he'snot driving and he won't help us, like you're just desibly. The guywas verbally abused because I did not want to fish with the I mean Iflat out told you. My other guy that was there stubborn up there. We were smoking the fish and he's like no, we need to leave here. You don't. We don't catch them here. I'm like Bro with smokingthem that. That was shutting the pictures, the showing the pictures. The shownever aired, to my knowledge, because they didn't catch anything in theother boats. We Act because one point hot to fish. We took tofish and four days or while I don't I specifics, don't honestly don't rememberexactly the numbers on that. You're better with that stuff to me. Butin fair and this wasn't like this was a me and Steve Thing. Turnit. We're trying to legit help this guy. We took the couple luresthat I had that we're just smoking. We we multiple lures catching we hadto in particular that we're smoking. We put them in a lunch bag,put with air and threw it over to him right for them to net, like we pull up right next and like would put these on, put himthis far? Did it right here? Who? Here's the waypoint, andthe guy was like they didn't, couldn't. I mean they were trying to tunethem, like don't tell them, they're prot that we just took theseoff our lines. They just didn't. They didn't understand what was going on. And the One guy understood, my tournament partner, and that's he gotto fish or three fish, whatever they got. But the other guy,oh my gosh, with the owner of...

...the lodge. It was I can'tsay the words, but yeah, it was just like a mental just yeah, and it's trying to be politically for a while, Steve Being pertically correct. Well, yeah, is that even a thing? I guess it is. So PC Steve in that day, I mean I want I want tohear this in your words, because I've talked a lot here. But so, I mean I've got a thirty five inch wallet, but I caught HimLake Erie, you know, state record with with eggs and and I meanit's fourteen. Something about EGS. I've caught some big fish. I gota fifteen one. Still the couple biggest fish I've ever seen were on thisday. We're talking about later in the day. Me and Steve are bothhooked up. Now. You know, you wonder why I carry three nutsin the boat. You know today, I mean, Guy, would Ineeded them? Actually, we had four odds. How about my strength today? Producer, dude, what he's he was pretty amazing with a camera andgetting in that one arm and nets and I had to donkeys. I getlike thirty incher in a twenty eight and I'm like, Oh my God,and I'm trying to it's any rate. I diagree. I just wanted alittle props. That's you did make. You did really good today and youdidn't can see sick and continue. I'm going to give you cookie. Sostill, I'm going to set this up and you bring me home. Thiswater, where we're at, you could see, I don't know, twentyfeet down. I mean it might be easy and at that point, sopeople understand home that maybe aren't fishing in waters like this. Maybe you're fishingin some kind of tantic looking, you know, Lake of the woods orsomething. If you're seeing in water that you have ten foot of visibility,if it's ten or thirty, it doesn't matter, Walleyes get stinky and itchanges the whole game on what you have to do and we made we adaptedto that. We're able to figure it out. But me and him bothhad a fish on. We have one net. Again, I don't knowSteve Well, he's trying to be like I got this. I'm the manand I'm like no, I guide, I do this one hand of myselfall time. You take being that. Then we'll double scoop, you know. But we're communicating. This is we're reeling and we lost. I meanwe got one of them in ultimately, because it was like a parlay goingon. It's smaller of the we get this fish and it's like thirteen anda half and it's the only time in my life, I think, thatI've ever landed a teen er fish. That would win the fall brawl foreverybody. I mean a giant fish of a lifetime. It's laying the boatand we are both audibly pissed because there's two fish that we saw, Idon't know, twenty thirty feet from the boat, but it they looked likelike a Bluga whale down there. And we saw the fish we got inand we now know. We put it on a scale thirteen, five orso, sir whatever as the three, and we're like, me and himkind of both the same time. We're like that was thirteen and a half. What was that biggest those eyes I've ever seen my life. Yeah, without a doubt, without a doubt, I mean the the what was it? Thirty? It was a little over thirty two inches? I don't remember, but it was twenty two inch your and the only reason we knew thatbecause we took fishing line and cut it the boat. I do, Ido remember that. I do remember doing that. Yeah, because I'm like, I've got a know down the road and the U asked your one ofyour guys at game justtry there in Ohio, and the guy said that was alittle over fourteen pounds. We were guessing thirteen, but he said Ithink it was travis credible, you talk to anyways. But I mean we'retrying to measure this somefing. It's freezing cold. I mean this is beenthe brutal the last day of this trip. Not to jump ahead, but thelast day of the trip is actually I still like we couldn't, wecouldn't watch the boat watch like there was, I don't half an inch ice orsomething that had formed over night, because they were just went to nowind and it was brutle. But yeah, the trips there, I mean itwas always something, but I still remember us kind of looking at eachother like what the hell just happened, because you catch a teen er fish, but yet two of the biggest fish I've ever seen my life. Walleywise, probably didn't they just in. They would just come up. I meanthey would be down so deep and they would be eat. Have Fifty, sixty feet of line out and they were straight under the boat. I meanyou just had to reel this little micro reels with three hundred. There's likethis and it's so cold. That was the thing. I mean it itwas just it was an amazing time. But you know when they come onunder the boat and you can just see your bait swim away and you seethis wall I just hovering and they just slowly go away in, you know, and you just had a fourteen pounder in the boat and these were Iknow, the water magnified, but you know, when you know, Iwill all the fish story. It's a no one. You know that theyare probably in the S. maybe sixteen. The one, the one you lostwas probably fifteen. The one I lost, it seemed bigger than that. I mean that, no, I would go with that. I'm readyto break a Rod. I was so mad. I've had I've had fifteen. So I've had I've had them over fifteen. My hand that I snaggedin the river as a kid, you know, like state records ship. And then I've had a fifteen one that...

I caught, you know, outthere on Erie. Yeah, but again, when they get that biggie got ascale, because you just don't know. But I can tell you that whenyou have a fourteen and look substantially smaller, shouldn't beat this up anymorebecause it just it's times. Twenty years later, I've not let him forgetabout this. I do, but quite frequently when I think you brought itup, one of the shoots we did in the spring and turns dirt toone of the ripping his ass. I don't like catchy sheephead, but ifI ever want to go sheephead fishing, that is the greatest sheep had fishery. Do you remember running those dipsie divers down on their sixty, seventy feet? We see, we had to back the boat up and at the timewas a two hundred and fifty horse. We had to take the two hundredand fifty horse and drive at them because we couldn't we couldn't get them atbut you know, there that like a barn door and they turns out tothe reels. The those reels have sixteen pound drag to him. If that'sif you type them all the way down, sixteen pounds will still pull out.Yeah, you couldn't take it up. They would pull that out. Itwas amazing. It was crazy, but that's also that it was notthat day, but it was that trip where what happened was this show ofa show was over with. And do you remember? I'm I'm going togo the throw under the bus train. Me and Steve Her like we're likewe got to stick this out. We got you want to fish another couplebays, and so we made it changes to do that and that next daywe came back and he drew steep is an amazing boat driver country gets herdone on the wheel and he is boat. Oh yeah, it's if it wastwenty feet from shore, it was far, because I felt like Icould rent reached out and broke my arm off on a tree because it wentfrom like, you know, it was three feet and then it was ahundred feet and the waves were so nasty that we looked back and they hadlike a hundred eighty foot coastguard cutter following us, because they're liking on theloudspeaker, like it. Basically, what are you doing? What are youguys doing? And we're and we've got a long way to go back andwe're in this tiny season and the twenty five miles or longer. Yeah, yeah, and in this little skinny, skinny stuff. But we went backthat time and this and this is where I was like, this is thisis rough Steve, roughly, you know, rough round edges. One of ourCanadian budds used to call him fifty, and I'm like fifty, like therapper he's, I could be no figure, like grit sand paper onyour face. And so we go back to the dock and we've got twogiants in the live while and me and him, we let every single fishgo, but we had these two giants in there. And again, youknow, this is ironically, would do its work with in fisherman. Ihad some stuff coming up and we're shooting slide film. That's how longer thisis. Digital did not exist, or at least it into the common man, at that point, and so we had slide film and Steve, course, doesn't know freaking the thirty five millimeter cameras, slide film, which isreally tricky with the exposure and stuff, but basically just keep banging them outand it cost me three bucks every time you hit the button. So wego back to you remember, we went back to the dock and the gamethere in this guy his mouth and you're like just leave it alone, leaveit alone, leave it alone. I'm like, Dude, he will notshut up. You will not shut up, because you went up and then hecame back. I got the camera because there was so cold, Ileft my expensive camera and stuff, you know, so don't fag up orover in the in the cottage, and then we're going to film in theNice Water by the dock there. Yeah, and I come back down and I'mlike just, dude, just like cut, just just let him go. And this guy finally had got to the point where he was like yeah, you Americans can't catch it, and he's got two guide clients in hisboat and Steve unleashed down him where I was like this is impressive, thisis impressive. If you've been coming for me. I don't say that offbut do you remember? He just would he just would not stop, andthen I got you know, he just went off and then I think hisclients wanted to hire you. Yeah, they yeah, that's what they did. They wanted they were like, can we get a business card? Andyou know, I said Hey, man, I you got to kind of stickwith what you do. I can't do that up here whatever, becauseI felt bad for the guy, but he basically dug his own who tip, running his mouth and I just said to dude, we just went out, we caught twenty fish. You know, you're twenty three fish. Twenty threeof them were all twenty, twenty two or twenty one were over tenpounds. We had like to nine pounders. And he's no, he didn't.And then I just showed him, started showing the pictures and then Iwent to live will pull these fish out in front of his clients and justI'd have enough, I know, I just it's it is funny because thatwas literally when people people ask me all the time like how, Dude, how do you and cut your Steve Me, this is the story of how I'mat Country Steve and and the Shenanigans twenty years later, have not stopped, I promise, not one bit. No, but we had to haveyou on and talk a little bit about stuff and I guess just leave mewith this. You gotta, I gotta understand this a little bit from fromyour perspective, because I do a lot of promotion stuff. I mean I'vebeen on a lot of things, magazines, TV stuff, whatever. Mean, producer dude at a lot of content. People love this country. Steves,I mean producer dude. Have you heard it was born? I mean, how many times have you been in the boat with me and people areyelling stuff? They pu due even I've even heard it when I was inCagnito that one day. Remember I was...

...at the boat ramp. That guywas yelled you down at the dock and I just like, I stay outof it. You know, I've been twenty years. I've done half theshows with you, but I'm always off. See, I'm always sharing to help. And now he's now, he's just sung. You're just got doneone, arguably one of the bigger shows in not that I just I've doneone of the biggest shows period and outdoors. You just wear a camera boat driver. For what tinge comes to show by need country and he doesn't needany Glam. He's just, he's just, he's he rolls a sleeves up he'sa blue collar get or done guy. I'm not the camera guy. Don'tlike being on you know it. Yeah, I despise being on camera. He says I had he likes a little bit. He says that cutwhite. This country Steve think blew up a little bit. I saw it. Ye, yes, I agree. I'm in this your tenement fishing.I still did not go on stage, or one of them. Well, but I think you're much more comfortable now and I think you're embracing this. You're embrace the country Steve Thing, even to be on the shoot where. If you want to know how country Steve got the name Country Steve, makesure you go back. I'm sure you can put a little video like onhere. Man a possibly right and up right, top up in there, and that's how the name country. This was not playing. This just literallyshowed me some Filthy Day snastiness and I was like what. None of itsurprised me, mind you, but the cut, it's just like you can'tgive somebody a nickname like it's got to be earned or just wizard and andthat one, I mean, nobody saw it coming, but here it is. But while we're also here, I mean producer. Dude, give mea synopsis, because you've been in in the both country Steve. You've seenthe development, I would say, of Country Steve and just Steve the person. He's a lot slimmer than what we started for starters. Yeah, buttell me you're still your food. No, you know better, quite the opposite. Steve Brings me snacks. He knows how it works. But giveme. I mean you've seen the evolution of him and to now what hiscountry see. He went from fifty great sand paper to country Steve. Butwhat are you seeing there? I've seen him. You don't know which SteveYou're going to get in the three. I think I've shot with them nowthree times and I think I at least I think I remembered tell maybe forOh more, that you didn't need multiple he was multiple camera boat drivers, but I didn't know. I didn't know him at that point. I'm sayingthe one he's done recently. We I think we've chat together at least sixtimes, a hundred percent. So I can name them off. Just thewinner one going down east, the spring one. I mean that's just boomboom boom. Right, yeah, but I anyway. So it's he gotthis this gruff guy the first day and I'm kind of put a microphone onthem and them today he's just kind of scream right, he's just growling atme more than anything. I was like what is this guy? Who Didyou know? How did Ross get this guy? And then I do rememberand I remember talking to row us after it and and this was after country, Steve kind of blew up and I remember like he was on it today. It was funny. was being and then I think it was the lorraine. Shoot, he was angry again. So I never know. I neverknow what I'm gonna get with them. I end now. At first Iwas like man, do easy just hate everybody, but I just see it'sjust it's just how he answers. Yes, he it's just how he is.Yes is the answer. In fairness, he does this for me, though, to help me out, because he doesn't give a shit of no. So he had that's clear. Yeah, that's clear. So sometimes it's likewe get like hey, I he really I think you finish this gotcountry, but I like how I refer him not just this country, butI think that, you know, like there's days where he's like I reallycan't be here because I got too much shit going on with life and work. But I I committed to so and he maybe that commitment good, butthen there's other days like hey, I need to get away, and allhe flops. Have some fun, because, I mean he legitly loves to fish. ME and Steve Go fish in the Gulf of Mexico. We're goingtrips, step rolling. He's not at Dude, he did. That's that'sfake, fake news. But I mean me and him go on trips allthe time, just because I don't put everything on instagram people and you don'tget to see everything. So that's why you see things pop up. It'sfive years later and some stuff that me and him do we've made kind ofagreements, like hey, we're just going to shut this down. This isjust me and him doing something. So yeah, but I think in fairnessthere's that where you know he just like man, this kind of sucks because, I mean, doing what we do, it's how I make my living. It's not necessarily they it's not fishing. It's necessarily it's not fun. Imean like today with what we did. We ran fifty miles on the GreatLakes today. There's stuff you have to do. We had to doit given without getting into details, that's what we had to do to makethis all happen. And we're got some giants. But producer, dude,I'm looking at him over here and he's like sucking it up because you knowhe gets seasick. It was it got to get a little nasty and youknow, we got a thirty mile freaking run. Man, it's not fun. My pocket doesn't like it, my back doesn't like it, and that'swhat these people they're sitting home and they're...

...like, oh, they watch theseyoutube videos. I don't think they really understand all that goes into doing itthat day a little alone, all the stuff, me and you working onour trade for twenty plus years, and all the gear. Well, youknow, just like that one shoot we did for one of your past itwas ten feet ten years ago, where we went way north and we satdown on that spot. I'm like, I just don't feel it here, and then we moved. Oh yeah, but we both list each other likelytake, take this what we want to go and so I drove the boatand like all right, and it would how did I know the fish werethere? I don't know. The fish were there. It just he gotthat that feeling. When we set lord out and there was a six pounderand another board eight, we could even get six rods out, I meanin that shoe and eat that guy. You know what was he had two, three hundred thousand dollars of the cameras to one hundred between both of bothsetups. We had a half million and cameras around us right in debt.Shoot was a threeday shoot and we got it done the less and eight hours. I mean the shot at the shop, the shot up there, and itwas just we didn't have it dialed in, but we just adjusted onthe fly and had it happening. And I told you to do just relax, let's enjoy it, let's just go fishing and you relax. We enjoyedit, we went fishing, we knocked out of the park. Well,it's easier. It's like today when I was trying to talk, and youknow, part of what we do is your host. I or what I'mdoing. You're a host and it's hard to host run the boat and seewhat's going on, watch all the rods and pay attention to make the changeson the current and that you know, that was kind of the case today. I mean I even made the comment today. I'm like, man,I need somebody else, or where's country Steve at when you need them? But and he really did say that. I did see and he I youasked me to go today and I just just work. I couldn't do it. But producer did say that we do better when it's just me and himand I'm like, well, I think he's a little frete of it.So, in closing, because this has been amazing, I think people noware going to be like this country Steve Guy, he really is a pieceof work, but maybe maybe he's got a little bit of a teddy bearerin them too. Where are you? Where do we see this whole countrySteve Thing going like? I mean are you? Are you see? Areyou seeing it or hearing it? Outside of Peel Shirt smugs teaching? Wegot a t shirt guy. We're doing but you know, I I justdo it. Help you and to hang out in you know, you andI even talked about I don't want to say his name, but one guykept commenting and you know, I said, Hey, let's do a little fishoff sobering kyle. Mr Kyle, I don't think he's ever answered tocall back, but you know, hey, I'm up for anything. Look, let's give it a world. You know, Ross and I have atrip playing the Louisiana. I don't know if it's just you and I aregoing. If it's just you and I are going, bring the cameras andlet's do it. Yeah, we're definitely going to start doing more of thatstuff. Me and you have talked about that, some of the kind ofthings that we don't need to get into now. But it's Steve isn't country. Excuse me, he has actually corrected me before too, by the way, if you remember, I believe country has. He's embraced the camera thanwell, but I because I think he's more comfortable. But it's all ongood fun, like it is just about really fishing, but having fun.Yeah, yeah, it's sometimes you forget that you know what you you get. Probably forgets that. There's no rout about that. It is, youknow, what's us my you got it all on your shoulders. I meanthis is your living, it's not my living. You know, I tryto help you, to bring you back down so you enjoy it. Yourelax, and that's, you know, what I bring to the boat.So you're not doing every the caller guy, even when I help you on guidetrips, you know, especially, you know when they sit down inthe middle and you got six rods going up and they're going to have lunch. You know, I have that guy. Had that guy the other day.I know, I know your tears later, but you know, mybuddy. I guess we'll close it with this. I mean we're here tohave fun. Hopefully people are getting a you know, a little charge outof the country. Steve Things in and you can learn a lot. Imean Steve's an excellent fisherman, regardless what he's fishing for. He picks upand stuff so quick. I think when I first met you that was thething. I'm like, dude, this guy out fish you in your owngame, like don't you show them what you're doing. It's over with. But you know, another guy we've had on the PODCAST, Fred Zinc,is a good friend of mine, pretty big deal in the hunting world, you know, and especially in the waterfall world, and I remember him tellingme again about twenty years ago when I met him and I said I madea comment common passing, just me and him. I said, man,you pretty damn serious about this hum thing, because I mean, and I saidthat to him as a compliment, because he's Super Smart Guy and he'sintense as all get up. I mean we're very similar a lot of ways. And he looked at me and he's like, I'm real serious about heis like this how I put food on the plates, how to take careof my kids, is how make my living and if you ain't serious aboutit, don't end real good. And and I look at that as thesame approach for fishing. It's a lot of fun, but it's still myjob and I have to do a lot of things that I don't want todo. And you've just like today. I mean you've got to put fishin the boat, like we don't have a video today. I burnt aton of money and gas today to bring...

...these people. I hope they appreciateit. Instead of catching three pounders, I knew where we could catch somebigger fish and it worked out. But you know, do the people sittingthere watching this for free on Youtube? Did they really care that I spent, you know, a couple hundred bucks in gas to make this happen?I don't know, but I didn't. I don't think people really understand. You know what it takes weeks to do what we're going out and doing inyou know, to be able to do that and repeat it and repeat it. We just don't happen upon this bit. You know, the fish that we'regoing after, it's a lot of research. You know, my whitecalled it, you know, sign and I never looked at in it science. But you know, we go after each science, the fish we do. I think part of this was to let people see, you know, they want to get so many people ask about the country steaving. The otherpart was to get him to let no country steevild more. But I thinkwe're kind of went to is this so people understand that, as they say, it takes a village. Like people see me holding up big fish orwhatever, and I feel correct me if I'm wrong. Producer, you likeI give credit to the guys like the very roacher when we have the allwinners in those guys on. It takes a lot of people to make thiswork, just like producer doing behind the scene. He's just as vital tothe whole big water fishing deal as I am absolutely this is getting way toolovey. I know. I think that Steve's talking about building a community orI think it's time to go what is going on down on that note, before there's anybody's getting any hugs, because I know he'll just try on punchme. I think that we need to be done. I think we coulddo this again, though I feel like just telling the return story to thatparticular trip would be there's been a lot of shenanigans through the years. Imean, yeah, maybe if we had big head on here that would bejust too much, but I don't. We don't have a big enough screen. Let's see, there is. So he has those days. He justnormal. He likes to keep when nobody's nobody's watching. Oh well, yeah, no, yeah, pay attention. Yeah, thanks for taking the timeto join us here. Everybody, to get short to get shorty Kragan, the brains behind shortest pod last forever. The electrical part of it, inthe building of stuff that this guy can create is true knowledge. It's itjust amazing with this guy can make. Shorty is a is a massive partof the big water deal. There's no doubt. Like I said, there'sa lot of people to make this whole thing turn and just because, likeshorty refuses to go in front of the camera. So if you'll get himon here, I would probably be even buy dinner. So you know howbig of a deal is that? That'll be a first. Yeah, that'swhat I'm saying. So any rate, thanks for tuning into the big waterpodcast. I'm Ross Robertson Age. You know when we have the man knownicedcurrently as country Steve, formerly known as fifty, and if you didn't wantyeah, go listen to it, but make sure you check us out onInstagram, facebook, Youtube, big water fishingcom big water.
